Introducing LiftSentinel™ - Automatic Lift Barrier System

It’s been over a decade since we’ve seen a meaningful new safety development for wheelchair lifts in vehicles. That changed with the announcement of the LiftSentinel™ Lift Barrier System from BraunAbility — and we wanted to make sure our customers and partners heard about it.

Here’s what it is, how it works, and who it’s built for.

What Is the LiftSentinel?

The LiftSentinel is an automatically deploying safety barrier designed for BraunAbility’s commercial Century and Millennium wheelchair lifts (2005 and newer models). It mounts at the front of the lift platform and creates a secure barrier that helps prevent wheelchair occupants from accidentally rolling beyond the lift during loading, unloading, and vehicle travel.

When the lift activates, the barrier deploys on its own using telescoping arms — no manual setup required from the driver or attendant. It completes deployment or retraction in approximately 10 seconds and includes a manual override option that allows operator control without disabling the lift system. When stowed, the system stays within a 66-inch height profile and doesn’t encroach into the interior cabin space.

Key Features Worth Knowing About
  • Automatic operation with manual override — Deploys and retracts automatically during lift use, with a manual override available when operators need direct control.
  • Anti-pinch and anti-rattle design — Built to detect resistance during deployment and operate quietly once stowed, keeping things safe and comfortable on the road.
  • Meets NHTSA 403 standards — The barrier arms have been tested to match NHTSA 403 handrail and outboard barrier test standards.
  • Compact telescoping arms — Deploy only when needed and add no footprint to the lift area or vehicle layout. No encroachment into the cabin.
  • Retrofit capable — Compatible with BraunAbility Century and Millennium wheelchair lifts from 2005 and newer. Mounts using four bolts into pre-existing lift holes with a single wiring harness.
  • Installed in under one hour — Designed for fast, installer-friendly integration. Minimal vehicle downtime.
Who Is It For?

BraunAbility designed the LiftSentinel for a wide range of commercial and public-sector applications. If you operate wheelchair-accessible vehicles in any of the following areas, this is relevant to your fleet:

  • Paratransit services
  • Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT)
  • Transit agencies and motor coach operators
  • School bus fleets
  • Taxi and rideshare providers
  • Any commercial fleet with wheelchair lifts

The system supports ADA-focused vehicle configurations and is built to hold up in high-usage fleet environments where durability and consistency matter.

Why It Matters

Anyone who operates wheelchair-accessible vehicles understands the safety concern that comes the moment a lift door opens. Passengers can shift or roll, attendants are managing multiple tasks, and the margin for error is real. The LiftSentinel adds a layer of automatic, passive protection that doesn’t depend on someone remembering an extra step.

From a risk management perspective, an automatic barrier system that reduces the chance of a rollout incident is a practical upgrade that can make a meaningful difference in day-to-day operations. And because it integrates with existing lifts rather than replacing them, it’s one of the more straightforward safety improvements a fleet can make.

What This Means for Your Fleet

If you’re leasing vehicles through Capital Lease Group that already have BraunAbility Century or Millennium wheelchair lifts installed, the LiftSentinel is a retrofit option worth exploring. The four-bolt mounting system and single wiring harness mean your vehicles won’t be off the road for long, and there’s no need for a new lift or a new vehicle.

If you want to know whether the LiftSentinel is a fit for your fleet, our team is here to help.
